I think that people often think of vocalists as the footloose and fancy free sort - at least in terms of kit! And true, I know some who own/carry no more than a microphone. Me, I have stuff. LOTS of it. More than anyone including the drummer...

The full chain for my vocal kit is: Shure SM58 - > Focusrite ISA One preamp - > [FMR Really Nice Compressor - > Electroharmonix Voice Box (only used for the reverb)] - > return to preamp - > Alesis Multimix 8 mixer - > RCF 310As plus Db Opera M10 floor monitor. Plus all the associated cables and powercables and extension boards. 2 x LED multi-coloured lights plus the XLR cables for them. Oh, and speaker stands, mike stand, and the spare leads and the spare, spare leads.

Maybe learning to play the guitar as well is not such a great plan :-)

Fascinating. Hadn't thought of taking a compressor and reverb unit to a gig, although I have these items kicking around. I haven't switched them on for years - maybe I should! I'm happy with a bit of reverb on the PA and have the bass turned right up and the treble turned low on my channel to compensate for the peaks and tone of my voice a bit. However, my favourite toy is 16 track recorder. I use a stage mic and record myself endlessly, singing straight into it as if on stage and pulling back if necessary etc. Once I'm sure I can get a good recording of a song several times in a row I reckon its good to go.

Sound mixers hate me too, I have a very "peaky" voice [and pulling back from the mike only works so far] - that's why I have got all this kit, so I can make their life easy (easier). Otherwise they just turn me down too much or get heavy handed with vicious compressors - with which my voice most definitely does NOT agree. But I much prefer to do my own setup where possible, and the overall band soundcheck - in fact we all wander out on long leads to see how it is from the audience perspective. But sometimes we play places where the PA/soundman is included/mandated so I like to have control my end, just like you guitarists do :-)

I have no idea what any of those things even are. I bought a dulcitar because I couldn't find a band and nobody would give me gigs singing acapella... and now I play the dulcitar in a band (it has to be the world's easiest stringed instrument).

Ian the vocalist (ahem!) in The Outbursts has a collapsible music stand in a drawstring bag (more collapse than stand) for rehearsals and for performing a selection of little pocket sound effects generators with which to annotate his performances - just press the button and hold it up to the mike - very funny - sound mixers hate him!

the compressor vs Kirsty's dynamic vocals. now is that a fair contest?
