"I'm not really qualified to get involved here, I've used Rotosound Swings since 1982. I briefly used the Fender things that came on my Jap Mustang until I broke one, replaced them with a set from Strings Direct only to find they were too…"

Matt Russell replied to Toby Burton's discussion Have you been in a band that has split up in dramatic fashion?
"Most bands I've been in have ended in apathy rather than anger but 2 spring to mind... The first band I was in, around 1982, called The Inside Minds, was a garage band, we didn't realise it at the time but in hindsight? Yep we were, we…"

Please tell us more about you, and/or your band/studio etc (including its name)
I bought my first bass (a Kay Precision copy) for a fiver, it had 3 strings on it and it sounded awful!! My first band was called The Inside Minds (great name, crap band!) leaving them I played bass in a load of bands in the 80's ending up in a band called Sudden Afternoon who released an album, a couple of singles and did an Andy Kershaw session (damn, just missed the fabled Peel one !!) We split up for all the usual reasons. Engineered a couple of albums for other bands, met the wrong woman, gave up playing. Got thrown out by wrong woman, got into electronic noodling, released a couple of little cds, did a few gigs both onstage and twiddling at the back of the hall for others. My electro knob twiddling partner put together a scratch band behind Damo Suzuki (from Can) for a gig at The Spitz and needed a bass player so i was talked into getting the bugger out of the box for the first time in 15 years. Dave Vorhaus (White Noise, remember that really freaky-trippy album from 1969 with the lightning on the front cover?) was also in the band so I couldn't refuse. A week after the gig I got married (to the right woman) who told me I should keep playing and to form a band (you see, she really is the right woman!!) and I've been playing (fairly) happily ever since.......

THE END.......or is it?

Roll up, roll up!!

The Stabilisers & The Outbursts are playing with The Lysergics and gloriously named Squirrel Skin Slippers this Thursday at Under Solo in Camden. It's a mere £5 to get in so why not start the weekend early?

You know you're a 'mature bass player' when....

... you sell your backline and go for the 'lightweight' option.

I'm selling my trusty 300w Trace Elliot 1x15 combo and upgrading to an Orange Terror Bass and a Barefaced Compact 15. 200 more watts and 15k lighter. bring it on!!!

Hi Matt, Dunno if you got my message. I could be interested in working with you (and your drummer you mentioned) if you don't mind playing the songs I've learned (mostly girly pop stuff). Send me a message or we could chat at the Miller social. I note that you live quite nearby.
